Spare Keys
One of the best ways to know whether your home is secure from a break-in is to lose your keys. You will find that it is next to impossible to get into your house. An extra set of keys would be a great advantage to have, if you could remember where they were.
The hard part is deciding where to put the keys- burglars know all of the good hiding places. On the ledge, under the flower pot, under the doormat, on the doorframe, or inside of those fake rocks- each of these spots, is as secure as leaving your keys in the door. There are undoubtedly a few secret places on your property that no burglar would think about checking, but you must remember where those places are.
Some experts recommend leaving your spare keys with a trusted neighbor, or even hidden on the neighbor's property. If a burglar happened to find the keys, he would have no idea what they opened.
It is best not to keep your car keys on the body of the car, thieves know those places like the back of their hands. It would also be foolish to keep your spare set inside the car- how would you get to them if you left your keys in the ignition and locked the doors, or if you lost your keys.
It is usually a good idea to keep two sets of spare keys for your car. Keep one set at home and one with you, either in a purse or wallet. This way, even if you have to call home for another family member to bring the keys to you, getting into the locked car will not be impossible.
If you have a car door or home entrance that works with a keypad combination, you will not have to worry about losing keys. If you forget the combination, you only have yourself to blame.
