Curling Irons Can Burn

During the years from 1985 through 1988, children under the age of five suffered approximately 6,400 burn injuries per year requiring hospital emergency room treatment as a result of touching hot curling irons. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, burns to young children represented about 60 percent of all injuries with hair curling irons during these years. A hot curling iron should never be left where a young child can reach it.

In addition to the injuries sustained by children, many adults have been injured using curling irons as well. The Commission estimates that there were 1,700 emergency room treated burns to the eye per year from 1985 through 1988 when users accidentally touched their eyes with the hot iron.

Advances in technology during the past few years have allowed curling irons to be made to get hotter. These hotter curling irons may cause more severe injuries to children as well as adults. You should always remember to exercise extreme caution when using a curling iron because they do have the potential to burn. Keep them away from young children, and be careful not to touch your eyes or face with the hot curling iron.
