Backpack Pain
A recent survey conducted by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons found that children have back and shoulder pain caused by heavy backpacks. Since backpacks have become a standard school supply for the majority of children, it is important to make sure that they are not overloaded or improperly used.
Some guidelines:
- Weight should not exceed 20 percent of body weight.
- Use a hip strap for heavier weights.
- Use a backpack with padded, wide straps and a padded back.
- Use both of the back's straps, firmly tightened, to hold the pack two inches above the waist.
- Pack neatly, placing the heaviest items close to your back, and try to keep items in place.
- Use the correct lifting techniques. Remember to bend with both knees when picking up a heavy backpack or any other heavy object.
- Try to make frequent locker trips between classes to replace books.
- Consider purchasing a backpack with wheels.
