What to do in the Case of a Gas Leak

The odor of natural gas is an emergency warning signal that should always be heeded. If you use natural gas in your home, and you can smell gas either inside or outside your home, can hear gas escaping from a broken line, or can see a broken gas line, you should evacuate your family and pets immediately. Leave as many windows and doors open as possible, allowing the gas to rise and dissipate harmlessly outside.

Call your local gas company or the fire department from a neighbor's house. They will be able to locate the source of the leak and repair it for you. If you feel that you are able to locate the leak yourself, remember that it is dangerous to use an open flame, light a match, turn a light on or off, use a telephone (portable, cellular, or regular) or operate any electrical switch or electronic device during this time as any flames or electric sparks could ignite the leaking gas.

Knowing where the emergency shut-off valve in your house is located is a plus. You will be able to shut off the valve yourself in case of a leak. The utility company is also able to turn it off. Once the gas has been turned off, you must wait for your local gas company to restore your service. Once the leak has been repaired and service has been restored, be sure to relight all pilot lights.
