Car/Deer Collisions
What are the facts?
- Although most car-deer collisions occur between the months of October and December, a car-deer collision can occur at any time during the year.
- Most car-dealer collisions occur between 6PM and Midnight.
- Rural, 2 lane roadways are the sites of the most car-deer incidents, but deer can also be found in densely populated areas.
Some Safety Tips:
- Use special caution in areas posted with deer crossing signs.
- Remember, if you see one deer, there are sure to be others nearby. Slow your vehicle down and remain alert.
- Do not swerve to avoid hitting a deer. It is better to collide with the deer than to collide with another vehicle or roadside object.
- Do a visual sweep of the surrounding fields as you are driving. You will possibly be able to see a deer before it comes onto the roadway, and can adjust your speed accordingly.
- Use your high beams if no traffic is approaching. They will illuminate the eyes of deer sooner than low beams, allowing greater reaction time.
Drive carefully and at a safe speed.
