Don't "Fall" Victim to Electrical Hazards

If you are like most homeowners, your fall chores include planting new shrubs, raking leaves, and cleaning out gutters. In your effort to get your home ready for winter, do not forget the importance of electrical safety. The electricity inside your home comes from outdoor sources such as transformers, utility poles, and cables, whether overhead or buried.

If you have ground level transformers, be sure to leave at least 10 feet of space surrounding them when you plant in your yard. Also, leave at least three feet of accessible space in front of your electric meter or around your electric pedestal. If you are unsure about the location of underground cables or utilities, contact your local utility company prior to digging. Whether you are using ladders or tree trimmers, be extremely careful around overhead wires. Contact could mean electrical shock or even death.

There are also several things that you can do to check your home for electrical safety. Avoid running electrical cords under rugs or carpets; there is a possibility that they could overheat and cause a fire. Do not overload outlets or force a plug into an outlet if it does not fit. Do not use extension cords as permanent household wiring devices; they should be used on a temporary basis only. Also, avoid using appliances with frayed, cut, or damaged cords as they could cause a shock or even fire. Do not place any electrical appliances where they might come in contact with water.

If you follow these suggestions, and have your home inspected by a licensed contractor, you can ensure the safety of your home for the upcoming winter season.
